10 Creative Blogs to Inspire the Imagination

It was Picasso who said ‘every child is an artist’ and exploring that inner artist enables our children to explore who they are, encourage creative thinking by stretching their imaginations and boost self-esteem by providing a sense of accomplishment. There are so many sources of inspiration on the web for making and creating and here are some of our favourites.

Little Button Diaries - http://littlebuttondiaries.com/

Beautiful Little Button Diaries is a crafting and baking blog written by two Brighton based mums and published authors, Tia and Laura, who share a love for all things creative.  It’s as much about the adults having fun as the children and there are specific ideas which can be done during nap time!  The ideas for upcycling are brilliant, including how to create a top from a bedsheet!  Perfect for earth lovers!

Play Hooray - https://www.playhooray.co.uk/

Claire Russell is a fully qualified early learning specialist Play Hooray is the home of PlayPROMPTS which Claire devised in order to inspire other parents or practitioners working with children.  Her YouTube video features regular video blogs and tutorials for play ideas with young children and you can follow her over on Instagram where she hosts weekly live stories taking you through an activity step-by-step. The complimentary PlayPROMPTS collection includes letters, numbers and outdoor play.

Mrs Mactivity - https://www.mrsmactivity.co.uk/

Run by a collective of ex and current teachers and designers who are passionate about changing the world through high quality educational resources.  All the activities are hand drawn and the emphasis is firmly on making learning fun.  What’s more the materials are categorised by school year with sections focusing upon special needs, fine motor skills and writing too.

Red Ted Art - https://www.redtedart.com/

A bit of a guru when it comes to art and crafts, this blog is hugely popular and it’s easy to see why.  It’s jam packed full of fun, easy-to-do activities for children of all ages.  Each one uses everyday household materials and there’s lots of step-by-step videos plus a host of free printables.

The Artful Parent

A fantastic resource for every parent designed to inspire the whole family to get creative. The directory includes over 500 ideas from painting to drawing, sculpture to collage as well as lots of process-orientated art activities which focuses upon the experience rather than the end result.  We love the fact that you can search the website by specific material or technique too.

Mum in the Madhouse - https://www.muminthemadhouse.com/

This award-winning craft blog is run by mum to two boys, Jen Walshaw, and is the number one mummy blog in the UK!  A pretty impressive accomplishment considering how many mummy blogs are out there!  Jen’s goal is to encourage others to live a creative life in a digital age and as well as arts and crafts also covers cookery, gardening and good old-fashioned games.

Crafts on Sea - https://www.craftsonsea.co.uk/

Crafts on Sea is full of realistic and achievable ideas. Based in Cornwall, we love the ideas inspired by the seaside from rock painting to driftwood aliens as well as the sensory activities including play dough recipes, sensory bins, water play and foam and pasta.  There are also 200+ beautiful free downloadable colouring sheets for adults – the kids might have to hide their Stib pencils!

Jennifer’s Little World - http://www.jenniferslittleworld.com/

A parenting, craft and travel blog Jennifer hand makes lots of toys and games for her children using recycled items such as cardboard boxes, helping to teach them that not everything needs to come from a shop and you can use your imagination to improvise with the everyday household items around you.  There are also sections on Hama Bead crafts and felt projects which are great for introducing children to sewing.  Check out the Day Zero Project too – 100 things to do in 1001 days designed to inspire creativity and get both kids and parents trying new skills and activities.

The Imagination Tree - https://theimaginationtree.com/

Activities on this blog are segmented by age, resources (spaces, toys, books) and activity (numeracy, literacy, physical and creativity).  The 30 day challenges are brilliant and we just love The Kindness Elves!  Writer, Anna, came up with the idea as a sweet-natured alternative to the ‘naughty elf’ tradition, with a positive message of emphasising kindness, sharing and gratitude with our children.  You can try making your own Elves or buy them from the site which also includes ideas on how to use them from baking cookies for friends to smiling at everyone you see!

Kids Craft Room - https://kidscraftroom.com/

This fantastic blog is bulging with child centred activities to promote self-expression, self-esteem and creativity across the age ranges.  Author and trained primary school teacher, Emma’s aim is to promote a more hands-on, fun, free-range childhood in our ever-increasingly digital world.  The focus is very much upon the explorative process rather than the finished product.  The art section of the site is particularly inspirational – our favourites are the heart suncatchers and Rangoli inspired sand art.
