Stib Meets…Sally Darby, Founder of Mums Like Us.
In our latest interview we are chatting to Sally Darby, founder of Mums Like Us, a network for disabled mothers. A truly inspirational woman, discover what inspired Sally to set-up the community and her favourite Stib word!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I was the kind of kid that did the register for her teddies. I wanted to teach for as long as I can remember. I taught for 12 happy years before recently leaving my job due to my health. (I have MS and have a severe visual impairment.)
What advice would you give yourself as a child?
The usual cliches about savouring every minute and not growing up too fast. But I wouldn’t have listened, even to me. So with that in mind I’d tell me as a girl and young woman to stay safe and look after myself and my friends. This is the same advice I will give to my girls.
What was your 'big idea' which inspired you to set up your business?
Mums Like Us is not a business. It does not make money! But it was born out of my own experiences of being a disabled mum and feeling like there was no one out there like me. I wanted to create community for disabled mums and encourage others to think about disability and motherhood.
What do you say to yourself when you need a confidence boost?
You’re stronger than you think!
What's your favourite Stib word and why?
That is so hard... I love them all! I’m going to go for joy finder. I wish nothing more for myself and my family than joy. Watching my girls find the joy in everything is the best feeling. Long may it continue!
Mums Like Us has serious goals, to promote equality and bring people together and make disabled mothers feel like part of the mainstream. But ultimately, when those things happen, joy is the end result.
